Charm, necklace

Challenge of Literature blog hop

When, I seen Erin was having a Literature Challenge, I just had to get in! I love to read now that I am a grown up! As a kid, I never really did!  But, I did read one book back in 1984 that has inspired me all these years later.  You are wondering what that book was???? It was Beautiful Joe by Marshall Saunders from 1893.

The story is told by the dog Joe. The first year of Joe’s life he belongs to a cruel and horrible man. Once Joe is taking away from Jenkin’s and put in a loving family. He learns all about how people should treat other animals and other people. It taught me to treat animals and others with respect!

My favorite quote from the book:

My good friend Cathy gave me an old copy of Beautiful Joe, it is in horrible shape. But, I love the writing in the front.

In the book they talk about a group called the “Band of Mercy” they were for animal rights.  This is why, the pendant I made says Mercy on it!

Bezel from Green Girl Studios– Collage made by me and then filled with resin!

This is what the back of the pendant says, which I thought was just perfect!

3 Rings for the past, present, and future. The colors of the earth. Blue for the sky, green for the grass and orange for the sun/ sunset! The brown dog (thanks Tracey) is for Beautiful Joe, hanging out on the back over seeing everything! I did a simpler necklace since in the time of Beautiful Joe, things were not fancy. Simple but nice!

  1. A very thoughtful creation! Loved it! I have not read the book, but I think I will now!

  2. Wow – I need to get this book (wonderful thing about this hop is learning about new books). I love the pendant you created and the colors that went into the necklace – fabulous!

  3. Wow!!! This is so creative! Love it and love the back of the pendant. 🙂

  4. Dogs give unconditional love, and it shows through in your inspiring piece!

  5. This is a wonderful tribute to the Band of Mercy! Great little dog charm too! I have never heard of this book but I’m defnitely going to read it now!

  6. Oh Kim! PLEASE let me buy this from you. Two reasons…first of all, I think it’s SO gorgeous and I love the little dog you added to the clasp. Second, is because I have this EXACT same book on my shelf at home and it looks like it’s in the same condition. I read it several years back and it was so sad in the beginning, but a really good read. Tori says to tell you the Cheshire Cat says, “We all make choices, we just don’t make consequences.” Good one.

  7. I especially like the quote from the book, that’s such a good reminder to show mercy and compassion. Your resin pendant is just beautiful and I like the 3 rings, the earth and sky and the sun elements. It really works together. Aren’t old, loved books just wonderful?

  8. Great design and I love that that book has obviously been read and loved a million times!

  9. You did a fabulous job with the challenge Kim! i love all of the thought and symbolism that goes into your pieces, from the saying on the back of your resin piece, to the 3 rings representing today tomorrow and yesterday, to the colors you chose! Beautiful. I added this book to my kindle last night, it is on my next to read list 🙂 Love you!

  10. What a great piece! The colors are just amazing. I might have to read that book as it sounds like a good one to read.

  13. I love your creativity and design, this is a beautiful, simple piece of jewellery. As for the book itself…I want to read it now, so thank you.

  14. K! I love it! That bezel is fabulous. I have some of their bezels too and I am always afraid I will ruin it because they are so special. You made something that is beautiful and references all the things you love about this book. I can see that this necklace will be like an old friend, feel easy on and always be around. Thank you for playing with me in this Challenge! Enjoy the day. Erin
